The Allen Academy boys golf team, led by seniors Jackson Funkhouser and Ethan Lucas, finished second in the TAPPS Class 2A state tournament last week at Waco’s Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
It was the fifth straight runner-up finish for the program. Allen shot 638 (325-313), its best score at state. Fort Worth's All Saints' Episcopal School won at 631 (311-320). Spring Providence Classical was third at 687 (348-339) in the eight-team field. Funkhouser, who has signed with New Mexico State, shot 143 (70-73) for second place. He also was second last year. Fort Worth Christian Life Preparatory’s Joseph Wolfe won at 139 (73-66). Allen Academy’s Lucas shot 146 (71-75) for third. Other Allen scores were junior Lathan Lucas 173 (86-87), senior Matthew Lightsey 183 (93-90) and junior Charlie Wiese 187 (86-101). Playing as medalists were junior Seonhu Lee 183 (91-92), freshman Hunter Willett 192 (89-103), senior Jacob Seo 194 (95-99) and Yuvraj Chahal 216 (110-106). St. Joseph’s Luke Rieger, playing as a medalist, shot 171 (82-89) to tie for 19th.

The Allen girls finished eighth, shooting 907 (453-454). Lubbock All Saints Episcopal won at 749 (377-372). Shiner St. Paul was second at 774 (393-381). Fort Worth Christian Life Preparatory’s Julia Leininger won at 157 (82-75). Allen senior Katherine Ortgies was eighth at 173 (86-87) in her fourth straight trip to state. Other scores were sophomore Khloe Wood 224 (114-110), freshman Addyson Williams 250 (123-127) and sophomore Ayden Aregullin 260 (129-131).
Funkhouser, Ethan Lucas and Ortgies all made the all-state team. The Rams are coached by Andrea Gaston, former Texas A&M women’s coach.
